On the morning of June 9, 2026 local time, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan paid homage to the China-DPRK Friendship Tower during their state visit to the DPRK. They were accompanied by General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and President of the State Affairs of the DPRK Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju.

At around 10:40 a.m., Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan arrived by car at the China-DPRK Friendship Tower at the foot of Moran Hill, where they were greeted by Kim Jong Un and Ri Sol Ju. A military band of the DPRK played the national anthems of China and the DPRK. Honor guards slowly carried a flower basket onto the platform. The ribbon on the basket bore the inscription “The Martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army Are Immortal.” Xi Jinping slowly stepped forward to the platform and arranged the ribbon. Afterwards, all present paid silent tribute to the martyrs. Then Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un watched the march-past of the honor guard.

Accompanied by Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju, Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan then entered the exhibition hall of the China-DPRK Friendship Tower. Kim Jong Un briefed Xi Jinping on historical materials, photographs, and paintings on display, which depict the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army fighting side by side with the Korean people and jointly rebuilding their homeland. Xi Jinping paused for an extended period to observe the exhibits carefully. He also read through the Volunteer Army martyrs list and briefed Kim Jong Un on relevant details of the martyrs.

Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un agreed that the period of the 1950s, when China and the DPRK fought side by side, remains an enduring historical memory for both sides. The two sides should jointly safeguard the memorial facilities dedicated to the martyrs of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army, and carry out distinctive education on revolutionary traditions and ideological and moral education for young people, so as to carry forward the great spirit demonstrated in the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, and ensure that the traditional friendship between China and the DPRK will be passed on from generation to generation.

Cai Qi, Wang Yi and other officials attended the event.
